Honoring Every Identity, Background, and Way of Knowing


The Kikori Framework Core Commitment One of Two

Culturally responsive practice is the lens through which every Kikori condition is practiced. It means recognizing that students, families, and educators bring rich cultural identities, traditions, and ways of knowing into every learning space. These are assets to honor, not obstacles to navigate.


Five Principles


  1. Honor student identity.

  2. Reflect diversity in materials and activities.

  3. Welcome multiple ways of knowing and participating.

  4. Build critical awareness.

  5. Engage families as cultural assets.


What This Looks Like

In the Classroom:

  • Educators honor students' cultural backgrounds.

  • Activities invite students to share stories and traditions.

  • Multiple modes of participation are welcomed.

  • Materials reflect diverse identities.

At School:

  • School culture celebrates diversity.

  • Leaders examine policies through an equity lens.

  • Staff receive ongoing training in culturally responsive approaches.

At Home and Community:

  • Family materials are accessible and reflect diverse family structures.

  • Family engagement events celebrate cultural traditions.

  • Community partnerships bring local cultural wisdom into school life.


Why It Matters


Culturally responsive teaching improves academic outcomes, reduces achievement gaps, and strengthens student identity and belonging. When students see themselves reflected in their learning environment, they thrive.

Building belonging is so important! I love seeing kids grow, and I help them do that by using Chess Analysis to teach them how to think ahead and respect each other's moves. It is great for everyone!
