She sat in that office for days until they hired her

You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated.
Maya Angelou, Letter to My Daughter (2008)
As a teenager in wartime San Francisco, Maya Angelou decided she wanted to be a streetcar conductor.
She went to the office. They wouldn't give her an application. Wouldn't even hand her the form.
So she sat down. And she came back and sat there again. For days, she simply kept turning up in that office until the Market Street Railway hired her, and she went to work collecting nickels on the back platform of a streetcar running past Golden Gate Park. She was one of the first Black women to do that job in that city.
She was a teenager, and the strategy was: be there tomorrow.
The quote usually gets read as toughness. Keep going, push through. But look at what the story actually contains. She did not out-tough anybody. She stayed in the room until the room changed.
Now watch two kids fail the same way in the same week. One misses the shot in a group that makes space, where somebody says "same thing happened to me." They're annoyed for an hour, then fine, and they've learned that failing in public is survivable.
Same failure, different room, nobody says anything. That child learns: next time, don't try where people can see.
The variable was never grit.
This week is Being an Upstander, Not a Bystander, run through Order a Pizza. The version nobody teaches is upstanding for someone who just failed.
Try this tomorrow
Start by going first. Name one failure of your own out loud, lightly, without a moral attached. Then ask the room what they could say to someone having that moment.
The room learns what happens to mistakes here by watching what happens to yours.
Rooms that went quiet can come back. Most of them do, faster than you'd expect, because kids want it more than they let on.
The Kikori activity
Order a Pizza. Pairs have to agree on one pizza order between them, and plain cheese is not allowed. Pairs that finish early merge into fours and negotiate again, then each group reports its final pizza to the class.
