Zoom Ert! A Simple Game With a Powerful Debrief

How to Play

Stand in a circle with space between each person. Pass a "Zoom!" to the right by clapping one hand past the other, and keep it moving around the circle. At any time, someone can call "Ert!" (like car brakes), which switches the direction so "Zoom" now passes to the left. Keep going until the group gets mixed up, or time runs out. It sounds simple, until speed, anticipation, and overthinking kick in.

What Students May Notice

Quick transitions require focus. Frustration shows up fast. The group only succeeds when everyone is paying attention.

The Real Learning Is in the Reflection

The game itself is just the setup. The real learning happens in the debrief. How do you respond when things suddenly change? Do you freeze, rush, laugh it off, get frustrated, or lock in?

Transitions happen all day long in school, between classes, activities, conversations, and emotions. Practicing them in a playful way builds regulation, flexibility, and awareness.
