Bringing Hispanic Heritage Month Into Your Classroom
Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15 through October 15, and it’s a great chance to bring curiosity, music, food, and real conversation into the classroom. Here are four simple ways to make it part of your everyday routine, plus reflection questions to close the month out.
1. Model curiosity
Lead by example. Ask students about their backgrounds, experiences, and traditions, and show genuine interest in the answers. A little curiosity from you gives students permission to be curious about each other, and that’s where real conversation and connection start.
2. Share music and food
Bring music, stories, and dishes from Spanish-speaking countries into class time. Then hand the mic to students: invite each one to share a song, snack, or story that means something to their family. It turns the classroom into a place where every family’s traditions have a seat at the table.
3. Celebrate diversity in every task
Diversity shouldn’t live in a single lesson. Whether students are moving, thinking, talking, writing, or singing, let them show their own way of doing things. When there’s room for more than one right approach, more students get to shine.
4. Explore global holidays
Hispanic Heritage Month is a natural starting point for celebrating cultural events from around the world all year long. Learning about new traditions builds empathy and helps every student feel seen.
Close the month with a check in
Use these three questions in a closing circle or as journal prompts:
Reflect: What is one tradition, food, or story you learned this month that you didn’t know before?
Connect: Have you ever shared a piece of your own culture with someone? What happened?
Grow: What did you learn about the power of curiosity and the impact it can have on others?
