School Appreciation Days in October (and Activities to Celebrate)
October is packed with chances to thank the people who make school feel like home. Here’s every appreciation day on the calendar this month, plus ready-to-run classroom activities to celebrate them.
All month: National Principal Month
Principals set the tone for the whole building, and October is their month.
Try this: Thank You Video Compilation. Students record short video messages for their principal, using prompts like “Thank you for helping me learn...” or “One memory I’ll never forget is...” The clips are stitched together into one keepsake video, then revealed at a surprise screening.
October 2: School Custodian Appreciation Day
Custodians keep every hallway, classroom, and cafeteria ready for learning, often before anyone else arrives.
Try this: Paper Gratitude Chain. Each student writes a thank-you message on a paper strip, like “I appreciate you for keeping our classroom clean.” Link the strips together into a chain and hang it somewhere your custodian will see it.
October 5: World Teachers’ Day
A day to celebrate the educators who show up for students every day, in every classroom around the world.
October 6: National Coach Day
Coaches teach teamwork, resilience, and how to win and lose with grace. Invite students to share one lesson a coach taught them that goes beyond the game.
October 12 to 16: National School Lunch Week
The people who serve lunch are some of the friendliest faces students see all day.
Try this: Thank You Recipe Card. Students create a “recipe” for gratitude, listing the ingredients that make their lunch staff special. Collect the cards in a basket or display them on a “Thank You Lunch Heroes” bulletin board.
Some schools celebrate on different dates.
October 19 to 23: National School Bus Safety Week
Bus drivers get students to school safely every day. Use this week to talk about bus safety rules and thank the drivers who start and end every school day.
